J.R. Liggett’s Hair Shampoo Bar

If you’re looking for an easy eco-friendly swap or a fantastic stocking stuffer for next month, swing by the store and pick up a J.R. Liggett’s Shampoo Bar. Earth-friendly, hair-friendly, and even pet-friendly, these shampoo bars help reduce carbon emissions associated with shipping heavier liquid products and are made with natural ingredients that don’t harm ecosystems and wildlife.

J.R. Liggets’s shampoo bars are all 100% detergent free and won’t strip hair of natural protective oils. They don’t contain any Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS), DEA, or any other petroleum based detergents and are also GMO-free and gluten-free. There are no animal products, or artificial preservatives or colourants, and no palm oil.

Instead of all these common chemicals found in most shampoos, J.R. Liggett’s shampoo bars are made from 100% natural edible vegetable oils. This means these shampoo bars are great for grey or silver hair, coloured hair, and hair that’s permed or naturally curly. In fact, J.R. Liggett’s has formulas for all hair types and can even be used if you have allergies and sensitivities.

Shampoo bars are a great way to reduce plastic waste and to cut carbon emissions. After all, most of the weight of conventional shampoos is made up by water! Get yourself in a lather at home and you’ll help cut your carbon footprint.

Who is J.R. Liggett?

J.R. Liggett’s has been handmaking personal care products in an ethical and eco-friendly way for more than 40 years and is a zero-waste company. The founder, J.R., was introduced to soap making at the tender age of five by his Great Aunt Ann in Nebraska. This wise woman made her soaps by cooking down all of the fat, grease, and oils she had saved up through the year, creating the oils she needed for her soap.

This traditional style of zero waste soapmaking fell out of favour once petroleum-based detergents came on the scene in the 1950’s. Smart advertising campaigns helped convince us that these chemical detergents originally designed for cleaning oily messes like car engines and aeroplanes were also suitable for our skin, hair, and even our teeth. Unfortunately, these detergents strip away natural oils as well as dirt and grime, which can actually interfere with the normal barrier function of the skin, creating the conditions for skin sensitisation and a dry, itchy scalp and lacklustre hair.

J.R. Liggett, who was himself an advertising executive, took a different approach. After finding an old recipe card for ‘hair soap,’ he started making soap bars for friends and family as gifts. From there, the company grew to offer more than 30 products sold internationally, all with an eye on the health of those using the products and the planet as a whole.

That’s why J.R. Liggett’s Shampoo Bars are well suited to the Leave No Trace ethos, in addition to being airline friendly and convenient when travelling or camping.

Why use J.R. Liggett’s Shampoo Bars?

If you’ve not used shampoo bars before, it’s easy. Just wet the bar and create a lather between your hands. Massage this lather into your hair and then rinse and dry as usual. Simple!

Thanks to that thick lather and those vegetable oils, and because this shampoo doesn’t strip your hair’s natural oils, your hair will have more body and better manageability, and will feel soft while looking shiny and smelling great. You may even find you don’t even need conditioner – a win-win for the planet and your bank balance.

The pet-friendly shampoo bars are specially designed with dogs, cats, horses, and rabbits and other small animals in mind. There’s a dog shampoo and a horse shampoo for sensitive skin, a cat shampoo, and a gentle and mild small animal shampoo.

For us humans, you might want to check out the Moisturising shampoo to help remedy dry hair, Tea Tree & Hemp Oil to soothe an unhappy scalp, or Jojoba & Peppermint for a refreshing hair treatment.

Whoever you’re shopping for (yourself, friends, family, your horse), J.R. Liggett has what you need. And, yes, they also offer liquid shampoos made with the same zero waste, eco-friendly principles and natural ingredients.
